🇨🇴 En el día 26 del viaje, con energía renovada, emprendimos viaje hacia el occidente para regresar a los Estados Unidos. Por el camino paramos para almorzar en Tim Horton’s, un sitio de comida rápida que aparentemente se encuentra mucho en Canadá y poco en los Estados Unidos. Le hace competencia a McDonald’s, Starbucks y Dunkin’, y lo hace muy bien.

El tráfico fluyó rápidamente todo el camino excepto al llegar a la frontera sobre el río St Clair. Si bien el tiempo en la ventanilla de inmigración fue un minuto, el medio kilómetro llegando a la ventanilla tomó casi una hora.

Luego el tráfico fluyó nuevamente y un par de horas más tarde llegamos a Okemos, Michigan. El hotel era igual a cualquier otro; nada especial. Pero cuando los niños entraron al cuarto celebraron como si hubiera sido el mejor hotel del mundo.

🇨🇦 On the 26th day of the trip, with renewed energy, we set out westward to return to the United States. Along the way we stopped for lunch at a Tim Horton’s, a fast food chain that’s apparently huge in Canada though not so much in the United States. It competes with McDonald’s, Starbucks and Dunkin’, and does so very well.

🇺🇸 Traffic flowed very smoothly all the way except upon arriving at the border at the St Clair River. The time at the immigration booth was about a minute, but the final third of a mile to the booth took about an hour.

Then traffic flowed smoothly again and a couple of hours later we arrived at Okemos, Michigan. The hotel was similar to most others; nothing fancy. But when the kids entered the room they celebrated like it had been the best hotel in the world.

🇨🇴 Descanso/🇨🇦 Rest

🇨🇴 Algunos pocos notaron que nos atrasamos en reportar lo que hemos estado haciendo. Eso es porque hemos intendado aprovechar cada minuto de cada día conociendo las cosas que hay a nuestro alcance. Hemos visto mucho pero aún hay más que no hay tiempo para ver.

Después de 24 días de viaje estábamos físicamente exhaustos y decidimos tomarnos un día de cero turismo. Nos levantamos tarde, desayunamos y volvimos al cuarto para que los niños vieran televisión y los adultos siguiéramos durmiendo. Después Ani y Daniel nos averiguaron información para ir a patinar sobre hielo e hicieron el milagro de conseguirnos los dos cascos que nos hacían falta para los niños, entonces fuimos y sobrevivimos con pocas lesiones menores.

Almorzamos y fuimos al hotel donde hubo piscina y una tanda corta de lavado de ropa. Luego, aprovechando que seguíamos cerca de Ani y Daniel fuimos con ellos a comer sushi y hablar antes de despedirnos para retomar el viaje a la mañana siguiente.

🇨🇦 Some have noticed that we’ve fallen behind in our reporting of the trip. That’s because we’ve tried to use every minute of the day seeing the things within our reach. We’ve seen a lot but there’s still plenty that there’s not enough time to see.

After 24 days on the road we were physically exhausted and decided to take a day of zero tourism. We got out of bed late, had breakfast and returned to the room for the kids to watch TV and for the adults to take a nap. Then Annie and Daniel found info for open ice skating on the rink and scrambled to get us the two helmets we were lacking for the kids, so we went and survived with minor injuries.

We had lunch and went to the hotel where there was pool time and quick load of laundry. Then, since we were still by Annie and Daniel’s, we went out with them for some sushi and conversation before saying out goodbyes to continue on the trip the next morning.

Canada's Wonderland & Hockey

🇨🇴 El primer plan de este día fue ir a Canada’s Wonderland. Es un parque de atracciones que supera los parques de Disney en tres formas fundamentales. Primero, no se llena tanto que hay que hacer fila para llegar a la fila. Segundo, no hay medios de transporte dentro del parque porque no se necesitan. Tercero, las filas se hacen casi siempre bajo sombra de árboles.

Fuimos con Ani al parque y se hizo todo lo posible porque cada uno pudiera participar según sus gustos y estatura. Montamos en montañas rusas, vimos shows de acrobacias, nos tomamos fotos con personajes, y fuimos al parque de agua.

¿Cómo se sabe que los niños tienen en alta estima al tío Daniel? La siguiente actividad del día era ir a la cancha de hockey para ver a Daniel practicar. Le preguntamos a los niños si preferían seguir en el parque o irnos a verlo jugar y todos prefirieron la segunda opción. Allá todos vieron emocionados y luego en la casa recibieron de él instrucción en cuanto al equipo que se usa para jugar mientras que los gatos se ambientaron un poco más a los primos.

🇨🇦 The first activity of the day was to go to Canada’s Wonderland. It’s an amusement park that is superior to the Disney parks in three fundamental ways. First, it doesn’t get so full that you have to stand in line to stand in line. Second, there are no means of transportation within the park because they are not needed. Third, the lines to the rides are almost always in the shade.

We went with Annie to the park and every effort was made so that each could ride their favorites according to height and preferences. We rode roller coasters, watched acrobatics shows, took pictures with characters, and went to the water park.

How do you know that the kids think uncle Daniel is cool? The next activity was to head to the hockey rink to watch him practice. We asked the kids if they preferred to stay in the park or to go and watch him play and they all chose the latter. There they watched in excitement and later at their home he taught them about the sport’s equipment while the cats grew a little more used to their human cousins.

Toronto

🇨🇴 Resumir lo que hicimos el lunes es fácil. En parte lo es porque no recuerdo los nombres de mucho de lo que vimos. En parte es porque todo cabe dentro de la categoría de tía dedicada. En preparación a la llegada, Ani nos tenía listo desayuno y una carrera de observaciones completa con pistas, jeroglíficos, farándula familiar, y problemas de matemáticas.

Armados de brújula, tarjeta de transporte público y cámaras fuimos conociendo Toronto y la isla grande que le queda al sur sobre el lago Ontario. Las pistas nos llevaron por el museo, un edificio torcido, una torre de medio kilómetro de altura, graffiti, y el centro icónico de la ciudad.

Otras actividades dignas de mención son la carrera por el laberinto, la montada en bicicleta por el camino inundado, y el restaurante en el que comimos poutine. Eso sin decir que se la pasó tomando fotos profesionales de todo lo que hicimos.

Por la noche estuvo pendiente de los niños mientras que Mommy y yo pudimos salir a comer juntos por primera vez en tres semanas. Mientras tanto, se encargó de la comida de los niños y de entretenerlos con película y con instrucciones importantes en la interacción con los primos gatos.

🇨🇦 Typing up a summary of what we did on Monday is easy. Partly because I don’t recall the names of most of what we saw, but also because everything falls under the dedicated aunt category. In preparation for our arrival, Annie had made breakfast and put together a scavenger hunt complete with clues, hieroglyphics, family trivia, and math problems.

Armed with a compass, public transportation card and cameras we set out to get to know Toronto and the big island just south of it on Lake Ontario. The clues took us by the museum, a crooked building, half a kilometer tall tower, graffiti, and the iconic city center.

Other activities worthy of note were the race through the maze, the group bicycle ride through the flooded path, and the restaurant where we tried poutine. That goes without saying that she also documented the entire day with her professional photography.

At night she watched the kids to give Mommy and I our first chance to grab a bite together in three weeks. In the meantime she took care of dinner for the kids and of keeping them busy with a movie and important instruction on how to interact with their cat cousins.

🇺🇸 Niagara Falls 🇨🇦

🇨🇴 El domingo manejamos a NIagara Falls, Estados Unidos, y estuvimos una hora caminando y viendo los rápidos del río en su llegada a las cataratas. Desde Estados Unidos se ve la corriente y la fuerza que lleva, pero no es mucho lo que se ve en cuanto a las cataratas. El área es muy concurrida y no está diseñada para manejar la cantidad de turistas que había ese día. Al frente del centro de visitantes queda el Hard Rock Cafe, entonces fuimos para almorzar.

Cuando terminamos el almuerzo nos montamos al carro y manejamos dos cuadras hacia el Rainbow Bridge, uno de los puertos de entrada a Canadá. No había mucho tráfico y el proceso de inmigración fue más rápido que en cualquier aeropuerto. Así que llegamos a Niagara Falls, Canadá.

En Canadá lo primero que noté como conductor fue que las medidas de límites de velocidad en las calles no coincidían con las del tablero del carro, pero afortunadamente el carro permitió cambiar el tablero al sistema métrico. Conseguimos donde parquear, y pasamos toda la tarde viendo las cataratas desde el lado canadiense que, no solamente está mejor dotado para la cantidad de turistas que recibe, sino que ofrece una mejor vista de las cataratas también. En medio del calor, una de las cosas que más disfrutamos fue montarnos en un bote que nos llevó por el río hasta el pie de las cataratas, donde nos lavamos.

Salimos de ahí hacia donde la tía Ani, en Toronto, que nos recibió con Daniel, Tomate, Hollín, comida, y ponqué.

🇺🇸 On Sunday we drove to Niagara Falls, USA, and spent an hour walking and seeing the river rapids leading to the falls. From the United States one can see the current and its strength, but not much in terms of the falls themselves. The area receives more tourists than it can handle. Across the street from the Visitor Center is the Hard Rock Cafe, where we had lunch.

After lunch we got in the car and drove a couple of blocks towards Rainbow Bridge, one of the ports of entry into Canada. There wasn’t much traffic and the immigration process was faster than at any airport. So we arrived at Niagara Falls, Canada.

🇨🇦 In Canada the first thing I noticed as a driver was that the units on the posted speed limits didn’t match the ones on the dashboard, but fortunately there was a setting for this and the dashboard was now displaying information in the metric system. We found a place to park and spent the afternoon watching the falls from the Canadian side which, isn’t just better equipped to handle the crowds that visit, but offers a better view of the falls as well. Given the heat one of the things we enjoyed the most was the boat ride to the base of the falls, where we got soaked.

We left there and drove to Toronto, to meet with aunt Annie, who greeted us with Daniel, Tomate, Hollin, food, and cake.
